PRUDENCE By Caroline Prugh
1831, Canterbury, CT. Prudence Crandall opens a successful Female Boarding School with her sister Almira. In 1833, Sarah Harris, the daughter of a local free African-American farmer, asks to be admitted and Prudence accepts her. When the town erupts in controversy that eventually extends all the way to the state legislature, the Crandall sisters must decide how far they’re willing to go in the name of freedom. A new play about Connecticut’s official State Heroine.
Caroline Prugh’s recent New York productions include You Will Never Read This (co-written with Cat Miller; LadyFest 2017 at The Tank), Pinwheel! (random access theatre; 2015 NYIT Nomination for Outstanding Musical), It’s Only Kickball, Stupid (kef productions; The Advocate’s NYC Lesbian Stage Highlights of 2014) and Clear Cold Place (vilde chaya collective & David Carpenter). Readings/workshops include: Gertrude Stein, You Are Mine, Gertrude Stein (2017 HERstory at IRT), Immerwahr (co-written with Cat Miller; Drama League First Stage Residency, October 2017)Night at the Big Chief Motel (Holland New Voices Award, 2016 Great Plains Theatre Conference) and Til Death Do Us Part (with composer/lyricist Bobby Cronin) part of 2016 Overtures Series at The Gallery Players (directed by Kent Nicholson). As a songwriter, 54 Below/David Carpenter and New Georges have presented her work. She has been a finalist/semi-finalist for the Jane Chambers Award, O’Neill Playwrights Conference, LARK Playwrights Week, and Sigworks (Signature Theatre, Arlington, VA). She spent her first decade in NYC at Stuart Thompson Productions as part of the general management team for 25 Broadway productions including the plays: Proof, Take Me Out, Doubt, and God of Carnage.
WELCOME TO MATTESON! by Inda Craig-Galván
A suburban couple hosts a welcome-to-the-neighborhood dinner party for their new neighbors — a couple recently (forcibly) relocated from Chicago's roughest housing project — and it's anything but welcoming. A dark comedy about reverse gentrification and how we deal with the other when the other looks just like us.
Inda Craig-Galván’s plays have been developed and read at theatres including Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Black Swan Lab, Intiman Theatre, Playwrights’ Arena, and San Francisco Playhouse. Her play Black Super Hero Magic Mama is on the 2017 Kilroys List and won the Kennedy Center Rosa Parks Playwriting Prize.
WOMAN OF THE WORLD by Rebecca Gilman
Woman of the World, is a new play by Rebecca Gilman, which tells the true story of the wonderfully complex Mabel Loomis Todd. Todd was best known as Emily Dickinson's posthumous editor, but she was also a journalist, a naturalist, and a popular public speaker. The play takes place at one of Todd’s speaking engagements on Hog Island – an island Todd owned off the coast of Maine. During the evening’s entertainment, she reveals shocking secrets from her full and storied life. This play was written on Hog Island, in Todd’s very cabin, where Ms. Gilman was an Artist-in-Residence at the Hog Island Audubon Camp.
Rebecca Gilman. Ms. Gilman’s plays include Luna Gale; A True History of the Johnstown Flood; Dollhouse; Boy Gets Girl; Spinning Into Butter; Blue Surge (all of which were originally produced by the Goodman); Soups, Stews, and Casseroles: 1976 and The Crowd You’re in With (also at the Goodman); The Glory of Living; The Sweetest Swing in Baseball and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Ms. Gilman is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Harold and Mimi Steinberg American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award, The Harper Lee Award, The Scott McPherson Award, The Prince Prize for Commissioning New Work, The Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, The Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright, and The George Devine Award. Boy Gets Girl received an Olivier nomination for Best New Play and she was named a finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for The Glory of Living. Ms. Gilman is a professor of playwriting and screenwriting at Northwestern University, an artistic associate at the Goodman Theatre, and a birdwatcher. Her newest play, Twilight Bowl, will premiere at the Goodman in 2019.
JAZZ by Nambi E. Kelley
based on the novel of the same title by Toni Morrison
In Morrison’s exhilarating novel, Joe and Violet move from the Virginia countryside to Harlem at the turn of the century, young and in love. Twenty years later, Joe’s interactions with a young woman set off a series of violent events and unforgivable acts. Peeling back layers and alternating perspectives expose ultimately sympathetic characters, who—like the growing New York neighborhood and the winding woods of their youth—reveal their own rhythms.
Nambi E. Kelley has penned plays for Steppenwolf and Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Lincoln Center (Director's Fest) in New York, and internationally. Kelley recently served as playwright in residence at the National Black Theatre in New York, was a finalist for the Francesca Primus Award, The Kevin Spacey Foundation Award, and is working on an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Jazz which is slated for several regional productions in coming seasons. Her adaptation of Native Son has enjoyed productions across the country, most notably, productions at Yale Repertory Theatre, Court Theatre, and Marin Theatre Company, and was just published by Samuel French. Also an accomplished actress, Kelley has performed on regional stages across the country and internationally, including many shows at the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, and has been seen on several television shows, including Elementary, Person of Interest, Madam Secretary, Chicago PD, and most recently guest starred on NBC’s Chicago Justice. www.nambikelley.com.
